U.S. Open returning to The Country Club in 2022

In a rousing playoff victory over Nick Faldo, Curtis Strange won the 1988 U.S. Open, the last staged at the club and he was the last player to win consecutive championships until Brooks Koepka did it in 2017 and 2018.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – If you missed the official announcement by the U.S. Golf Association many months ago, here are the facts.

The Country Club, established in 1882, is getting its first U.S. Open in 34 years.

The U.S. Open is coming to The Country Club in Brookline in 2022, the course that was the scene of perhaps the most important golf championship in American history. It’s where Francis Ouimet won a playoff over British titans Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in 1913. The upset put golf on the front pages of newspapers.

Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open in Brookline in 1988. The last big event there was the Ryder Cup in 1999 that featured the great American comeback under captain Ben Crenshaw.

“We’re in for a real treat,” USGA executive director Mike Davis said. “It should be another memorable U.S. Open. The Country Club offers a historic setting and has played an important role in U.S.G.A. history.”

The Country Club, located on Clyde Street in Brookline, is the oldest country club in the United States and holds an important place in golf history, as it is one of the five charter clubs that founded the United States Golf Association, and has hosted numerous USGA tournaments including the 1913 U.S. Open won by then-unknown Francis Ouimet.

The U.S.G.A. also announced that Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina gets its fourth U.S. Open in 2024 as it becomes a regular part of the U.S. Open rotation. Martin Kaymer won in 2014, and Michelle Wie won a week later when the USGA played the men’s and women’s Opens in back-to-back weeks.

The U.S. Open started its East Coast-West Coast rotation in June 2018 at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island. From there it goes to Pebble Beach in 2019, Winged Foot in New York in 2020, Torrey Pines in San Diego in 2021, The Country Club in 2022, Los Angeles in 2023 and Pinehurst in 2024.

That’s as far out as the U.S. Open is planned, and even nine years out is a long time for typical USGA planning.

“I think the US Open would be an exciting, cultural, historical type of an event for us,” said Brookline town administrator Mel Kleckner. “The Country Club has a long history of golf in the United States, it has a lot of history and meaning for the town, so yes, we are excited to have the US Open come back to Brookline in 2022.”
