A Northern Challenge: The Shattuck

Located in the foothills of Mount Monadnock, The Shattuck is a fine spectacle of golf in the Northeast. It is quintessential New England: Northern pine, birch and oak forests; colonial farmhouses; natural wildlife; and small mountain ranges.

Upon arrival at this Sterling Golf Management-owned facility, you’ll instantly notice the mountain back drop, which will assure you of, at the very least, a visually enjoyable round.

The clubhouse includes a well-stocked pro shop and moderately sized lounge called the Mountain View Grille. The outdoor Mount Gay Patio & Summit Deck offers a place to relax with a cold beverage and enjoy the mountain views after your round.

With six sets of tees, ranging in yardage from 4,385 to 6,764, this Brian Silva-designed golf course can accommodate almost all levels of play.

From the black tips, the course has a rating of 75.0 and a slope of 147, which means it’s extremely challenging. In fact the slope is about 35 points higher than the national average.

The key to playing this course is club selection. If you insist on hitting driver at every opportunity, you better hit it straight or you’re going to be digging into your bag quite often.

As spring blossoms and summer approaches, Mt. Monadnock, and its environs, offer a great escape for the New England golfer. The Shattuck definitely delivers. In a big way!

Key Stretch

Holes: 5 and 6
Why: Two monster par 5s, back to back.

Hole 5 – Handicap No. 1

The name of the 5th hole is “The Gauntlet.” From the tips this monster plays 612 yards to a narrow green tucked into a rock ledge. There is no forgiveness on either side of the narrow fairway. A small stream protects errant shots to the front of this elevated green.

Hole 6 – Handicap No. 3

If No. 5 wasn’t enough to break your spirit, the 6th is another par-5 that plays to 564 yards. The name for this hole is “Triple Threat” because there are two distinct landing areas (off the tee and second shot) followed by a small green which is protected front and left by marsh and trees, and on the right by bunkers.
