CANTERBURY, New Hampshire – The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories that span over 15,000 lines of Middle English.
Canterbury Woods Country Club is a course that is comprised of 18 holes spanning over 6500 yards. And much like the literary masterpiece created by Geoffrey Chaucer, the masterpiece set just north of Concord, N.H. which was designed by Ross Forbes, has enchanted all who have set their eyes upon it.
With masterful views at numerous spots around the course, it is no wonder that Canterbury Woods Country Club has become a favorite amongst Granite-Staters.
Head golf pro Landon Comeau, PGA, was kind enough to invite us down to visit the grounds and play the course. I brought along a friend, and similar to the Sailor and the Cook, we set off on our adventure through the woods.
Along the rolling hillsides of Canterbury, you’ll find a marvelous arrangement of playable, yet challenging holes. Perfectly sculpted out of the forest with views of the southern tips of the White Mountains poking out, this course holds you accountable for every shot.
The fairways are tight, but the rough earns its name. Each bunker is lipped to test your skill, and when you arrive at the green, the reads are not as easy as they may appear. But fear not, this course will also reward you for each good stroke as well. Birdies and bogies are equally common here.
Regardless of how you score, you are sure to enjoy your round at this tranquil location in the center of the state.
As just like reading a good book, our round was suddenly over before I knew it. We had made our way to putt out on the 18th green. It was a mighty journey that took us through one of New Hampshire’s finest public courses. A journey I will not soon forget, and one I will look to revisit in the near future.
